Introduction to the Website

The Dominica Botanic Gardens was once considered one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean. And while the ravages of recent hurricanes have dimmed its luster somewhat, it is still a spectacular sight. This website is intended to bring the beauty and serenity of the Gardens to Dominicans at home and abroad, and to share this with Garden enthusiasts throughout the world. In addition, we hope that our efforts here will help carry the torch for the enhancement of the Gardens and the services it provides.

The main focus of the site is the beautiful local and exotic trees and shrubs with their gorgeous flowers that are scattered throughout the Gardens, together with a presentation of the commercial plants in the economic section at the back of the Gardens. These trees and shrubs are identified in our plant list and are hot linked to their photographs. They are also located by number on the map of the Gardens provided. Many of these trees and shrubs are reported to have medicinal properties. These are briefly discussed in the plant descriptions; and the medicinal plants are identified in the Medicinal Plants list, which is also hot-linked to the plant descriptions.

In addition, you will find a brief history of the Gardens, contemporary commentary by past visitors, a wealth of photos showing panoramic views of the Gardens, the ravages of 1979's hurricane David, cricket tournaments; photos of national day parades - police, cadets, women in national dress, together with a listing of past Curators, and information on current plans for the improvement of the Gardens.
