Getting Involved

This Gardens site is a private, DAAS sponsored, community initiative unrelated to any government organization. We are doing this on a volunteer basis, because it needs to be done. We plan to improve the site to include most of the plants in the Botanic Gardens. This will be an arduous task. A substantial amount of programming and research work was involved to complete the prototype, and it had only 14 plants. There are perhaps another 100 plants to be documented and uploaded. In addition, there are a host of small tasks that individuals can do, some in association with the Garden’s administration, to enhance the beauty and utility of the Gardens and the web site. But to get the job done quickly and proficiently, we could use much more help. There are several areas where help is needed; some must be done in Dominica, others are web based. Here is a partial list below. If you can help, contact us, come aboard:

  • locating and identifying plants in the Gardens
  • preparing tags and tagging plants
  • taking photos of plants and vistas in the Gardens
  • researching and writing plant summaries
  • editing plant summaries
  • making digital copies of old Gardens photos
  • reporting on current events and developments in the Gardens
  • periodic refreshing and updating of the web site
  • programming the refresh/update process
  • developing a Gardens photo archive for web site refreshing
  • forming a Friends of the Botanic Gardens group to advance Gardens’ interest
  • leading privately organized guided tours of the Gardens
  • designing and programming virtual guided tours
  • live webcam broadcast of scenic garden locations
  • searchable databases for flora, fauna, history, key figures
  • user interactivity - surveys, feedback forms, online file submission of gardens-related material, a donation button, etc
  • bulletin board - focused on sentimental reminiscing on gardens-related experiences and events.
